CITY TO HOST A TRIO OF ART AND CULTURAL EVENTS

The City of Hastings is hosting a trio of art and cultural events downtown on Thursday, August 19, including the kick off of a Mural Project at 6 p.m. on the backside of Hastings Family Service; a Makers Alleyway Market from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., a vendor popup experience behind second street that will feature handmade goods for sale and a chalk art experience; and a Music in the Park event featuring Latin band Charanga Tropical at 7 p.m. Join us for an evening of art and culture in downtown Hastings.

Mural Project Kicks Off

A mural celebrating Hastings history of diversity will be located on the rear wall of Hastings Family Service, facing Levee Park. Installation will begin in mid-August with a kick-off event to “see the artist at work” on Thursday, August 19 at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend and learn more about the mural in progress. The project is anticipated to be finished in early September. A dedication event is planned for Thursday, September 9 at 6 p.m. The City’s Public Arts Grant Task Force received 14 proposals from a number of high-caliber and experienced muralists from as far as California and Oklahoma as well as several from Minnesota. The awarded proposal is by Daniela Bianchini and Pablo Diego Perez Riesco (aka Kalaka). The mural embraces the theme “Our Growing Diversity, Welcoming the Future.” The mural was initially planned for last year, but was delayed due to the pandemic.

Makers Alleyway Market Pilot Project Begins

The City of Hastings is piloting a project that provides a way for the City to showcase offerings within our historic downtown and riverfront park as well as support area makers and artisans.

The Makers Alleyway Market will take place on Thursdays, August 19, August 26, and September 2 from 4:30-8:30 p.m. in the alley between 2nd Street and Levee Park. Vendors will be located in the alley between Ramsey Street and Sibley Street. The alleyway between Sibley Street and Vermillion Street will be a location for residents and visitors to draw their own art with sidewalk chalk. Sidewalk chalk will be provided. Interested vendors must register and apply for a Transient Merchants License. See Vendor Information and Requirements.

Music in the Park: Charanga Tropical Performs

Music in the Park: Charanga Tropical will perform on Thursday, August 19 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Rotary Pavilion.

Charanga Tropical performs as a ‘charanga,’ an instrumentation that dates back to the roots of Cuban music. The sound combines violins, flute, vocals, and full Latin rhythm section. Pack a blanket or chair & a picnic, or order take out from one of Hastings restaurants! Better yet, dine-in locally & come down for the show after dinner! Music in the Park is free to the public and supported by the Ruth and George Doffing Charitable Fund, making the concert series possible for the community and visitors of Hastings.
