Douglas J. Laumeyer, age 74, of Hastings, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 2, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.
Doug was born on June 13, 1950, in Long Prairie, Minnesota, to Donald and Lois (Bokinskie) Laumeyer. He was one of five children. At age five, his family moved to Hastings—a decision that set the course for a lifetime of deep community involvement.
Doug grew up loving sports, especially baseball and basketball, and graduated from Hastings High School in 1968. He went on to earn a business degree from Southwest Minnesota State University.
In 1975, Doug met Barb LaBarre in St. Paul, and from that moment on, they were a team. Together, they raised five children: Mike, Troy, Kristine, Nate, and Eric. Family was always at the center of Doug’s life.
Doug spent over 35 years in banking and had a gift for reading people. He often gave individuals a chance when no one else would, helping many buy their first home or car. He loved connecting with people, had a big heart, and was always willing to lend a hand. Social by nature, Doug enjoyed playing cards—especially cribbage and 500—fishing, golfing, and watching his grandkids in all their activities. His evenings often ended with a Fireball and good company.
Doug lived a life rooted in service, connection, and unwavering support for his family, friends, and community. He led by example, dedicating himself to numerous foundations, committees, and charitable initiatives. Deeply grounded in his Catholic faith, Doug felt a growing call in recent years to deepen his spiritual life. That calling led him to the Catechetical Institute through the Saint Paul Seminary, where he graduated in April 2025 and found great fulfillment. Among his proudest accomplishments were his longstanding involvement with the Hastings Catholic Education Foundation—an organization close to his heart—and his completion of the Catechetical Institute, both reflecting his enduring commitment to faith, education, and community.
Doug is survived by his devoted wife, Barb; children, Mike (Brenda) Chapeau, Troy (Jenny) Chapeau, Kristine (Nate) Knutson, Nate (Jen) Laumeyer, and Eric (Jess) Laumeyer; grandchildren, Zack, Josh, Alyssa (Cody), Samantha, Callie, Katelyn, Natalie, Megan, Nick (Clara), Rachel, Carson, Connor, and Lauren; great-grandchildren, Kelton, Oliver, Teagan, and Cullen; siblings, Becky (Al) Kline, Bill (Karla) Laumeyer, Dan Laumeyer, and Alan Laumeyer; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
He was welcomed into heaven by his parents, Don and Lois; grandchildren, Jack and Charlie; and his sister-in-law, Cookie Laumeyer.
