The results of the 2024 primary elections have set up the races that the city, county, state and country will watch come November.
Starting in Dakota County, Commissioner Liz Workman will face off against Yusuf Haji for Dakota County Commissioner of District 5. Workman received just over half of the vote with 2,001 votes or 50.42% with Haji receiving 994 votes or 25.04%.
In non-partisan races like county commissioners, school board members, and Supreme Court judges, twice the number of candidates as available positions will appear on that ballot. For races with a single available seat, that means the top two candidates from the primary will appear on the ballot come November.
Minnesota’s Senate seat up for election in 2024 will be a race between incumbent Amy Klobuchar who won the Democratic primary with 28,304 votes, or more than 95% of the Democrats’ votes, and Republican challenger Royce White who received 8,488 votes or 38.66% of the Republican primary votes, narrowly beating out Joe Fraser by less than 1,000 votes.
District 2 for the U.S. House of Representatives will square incumbent Democrat Angie Craig who received 26,865 votes or more than 91% of the votes in the Democratic primary, against Republican challenger Joe Teirab, who received 16,748 votes or 76% of the vote from the Republican primary.
Two seats are open for the Minnesota Supreme Court. Chief Justice Natalie Hudson is running against Stephen Emery for Seat 7 while Karl Procaccini will face off against Matthew Hanson for Seat 6.
In a widely-viewed race nationally, Democrat Ilhan Omar, the Representative of Minnesota’s 5th District for the U.S. House of Representatives won her primary race with 56.2% of the vote against Don Samuels. Representative Omar will face Republican Dalia Al-Aqidi in the fall.
