Cop on a Rooftop to support Special Olympics

Posted

Last week, the Hastings Police Department participated in a heartwarming initiative to support the Special Olympics of Minnesota (SOMN) at Dunkin’ on Vermillion Street. This event, part of the nationwide “Cop on a Rooftop” campaign, was a collaborative effort aimed at raising both awareness and funds for SOMN, the largest sports organization in Minnesota dedicated to people with intellectual disabilities. At the Hastings location alone, $854.14 was raised to help local athletes compete.
Across the state, 31 Dunkin’ locations hosted officers from various community police departments and sheriff’s offices, all working together to promote the cause. Customers were encouraged to visit Dunkin’ and make a one-dollar donation to the Special Olympics. In return, they received a coupon for a free donut. For those who contributed ten dollars, there was an additional reward—a coupon for a donut and coffee.
Participating Dunkin’ locations spanned across Minnesota, including Andover, Anoka, Apple Valley, Chaska, Cottage Grove, Duluth, Eagan, Fridley, Hastings, International Falls, Lakeville, Lino Lakes, Mankato, Maple Grove, Maplewood, New Hope, Otsego, Plymouth, Richfield, Rochester, Rogers, Roseville, St. Cloud, St. Paul, St. Peter, West St. Paul and Woodbury. Notably, the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office participated at one of the Eagan locations.
In addition to the “Cop on a Rooftop” event, law enforcement agencies also engage in other fundraising activities for the Special Olympics, such as the Polar Plunge. During this annual event, participants brave the icy waters of area lakes to support the athletes of the Special Olympics. The Hastings Police Department typically takes part in the Burnsville Polar Plunge each year.
For those interested in supporting the Special Olympics of Minnesota, additional donation options and information can be found on their website at www.specialolympicsminnesota.org. Your contributions help ensure that individuals with intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to participate in sports and programs that foster personal growth and community involvement.
