Coming in from 30 years ago, senior housing was going up fast off Tyler Street in downtown Hastings. Per the piece by staff writer Steve Eide, the project on Third Street was an all brick building, even as the name hadn’t yet been chosen.

“The fact that it’s all brick is unusual, and they did that deliberately because downtown Hastings is all brick,” Hastings HRA executive director John Grossman said.

Reported by Jane Lightbourn, meanwhile, was an upcoming workshop at the senior high school, the subject to be discussed that of “Learning to be Violence Free.” With growing awareness of child abuse due to the media and victims permission to talk about it, the issue was taking center stage, with well-known adults speaking out from different platforms on their childhood experience.

With two books in the district to teach on how Columbus treated the native peoples he thought were from India (hence “Indian”), the fifth centenary was low key, with change outside the public schools as well, as the Archdiocese was reconsidering how it covered the fallout from October 12, 1492 aside.

“Our general impression is that it (Columbus’ voyage) be discussed as part of history,” said one teacher at McAuliffe. “It needs to be discussed.” At the same time, balance was key.

“All sides should be exposed to the children,” they went on. “There are some circumstances that we are not particularly proud of. The issue should be looked at from all sides.”

Shifting back to the present from 1992 and the much discussed airport, New Prague representative shared his belief that a new airport wasn’t in the future. The reason?

No money for it. “Where I’m at today, very simply, is that common sense tells me that a new airport is not going to be built—even if people think it should be,” Vanasek was quoted. “The reason is that we simply can’t afford it.”
