Ceremonies, March for Them mark Memorial Day

Posted

Several local ceremonies and events will mark the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 26.
Members of the Hastings VFW Post 1210 and American Legion Post 47 will mark the solemn day of remembrance by offering a dedication, wreath laying, honor guard and taps at the following locations:
•8:45 a.m. – Hastings Veterans Home
•9:15 a.m. – Roadside Park
•10 a.m. – Soldiers and Sailors Cemetery. The wreath laying will feature children in white.
At 11 a.m., a Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at Levee Park, following by hot dogs at the Legion until they’re gone. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held at the Hastings Armoy, 3050 Hwy. 316.
The Memorial Day address at the ceremony will be given by Mayor Mary Fasbender.

March for Them
The 10th Annual Memorial Day March For Them will be held on Memorial Day.
“This event was started back in 2016 to provide veterans a way to honor our fallen comrades. Another purpose is to remind the public who the holiday is for, why many of us have the day off. Along the route we have Honor Markers with the names and pictures of our fallen comrades,” said organizer Tom Wright. “In 2023 we decided to change gears to a shorter route and picked the scenic 10-mile loop in Hastings. We tripled our marchers that year and saw many younger faces join us too. We start and end at the perfect spot, the Rotary Pavilion on the Mississippi River. This year we will start at 10 a.m. and expect to finish around 2 p.m. Sign up begins at 9 a.m. Participants can expect a great T-shirt, great snacks and beverages, along with a great time. We will have a meal for Marchers, Volunteers and Families after the program at The Studio thanks to the generous Wendi Shilts-Johnson.”
Wright said walkers needn’t be walkers. Kids and families are welcome. Cost to register is $35 for those 11 and older and $10 for kids 10 and under. Veterans are free.
Keynote speaker at the event is Drew Carpenter with the Wounded Warrior Project. He’s an Army veteran who served two tours in Iraq.
“He will share his compelling story along with honoring fallen comrades he served with,” said Wright.
