Hastings Boys Basketball (13-4) moved up to second place in the Metro East Conference (MEC) with two huge wins over Mahtomedi (10-8) and Two Rivers (8-11). Mahtomedi was sitting in second place, just ahead of the Raiders before Hastings defeated them 67-58. Then, against Two Rivers, the Raiders took down the Warriors 76-54 to cut Tartan’s lead in the MEC to just two points with eight of the last nine games being conference games, fans better buckle up for what could be a wild February. The only conference losses this season for Hastings have been to Two Rivers and Tartan earlier this year.
Versus Mahtomedi
Things were not going well for the Raiders at the start of the game. The Zephyrs took advantage of a flustered Raider defense leaping out to an early double-digit lead. Head Coach Chad Feikema was finally able to get the boys to settle into their game plan and Hastings began creeping back. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, Hastings trailed by two, 26-28.
Hastings never led once in the first half, and it took until 4:30 was expired in the second half for the Raiders to take their first lead 41-39. The two teams fought back and forth with a few lead changes until Hastings was able to pull away for the 67-58 win.
Weston Schult led the Raiders with 16 points, Matthew Foss had 15, Marlowe Strain 14 and Lukas Foss 13. Strain had the lead with rebounds grabbing eight, Lukas Foss nabbed seven and Matthew Foss six.
At Two Rivers
The game at Two Rivers was the opposite of the game versus Mahtomedi, Hastings jumped out to an early lead and took a 38-28 lead to the locker room at the half. The second half was nearly an exact duplicate of the first with Hastings scoring another 38 points and Two Rivers only scoring 26 to give Hastings the 76-54 win. This game was also featured on WCCO’s High School Sports Rally.
Brady Hendrickson was on fire from long-range draining 5-of-7 three-point shots enroute to a 19-point game. Schult and Matthew Foss each tallied 17 points, Jacob Reuter had seven and Strain had six. Strain once again grabbed eight rebounds, Reuter seven and Matthew Foss six.
