Black Dirt Theater’s Improv is set to return in 2026 in eight shows from January through May. The troupe began in the winter of 2011 and has been hosting shows during the winter and spring since.
Auditions take place in the early fall and then the two troupes meet weekly for “practice not rehearsal” said Tom Sorenson, technical director for Black Dirt Improv.
Sorenson took over as technical director for Black Dirt’s Improv last year alongside Sean Jones. The duo work with the two Improv groups to “hone skills to make you quicker, cleverer, more out there,” said Sorenson.
Because there is no material to rehearse, instead the groups instead work to build the foundational skills of trust, support, and “accepting strange gifts” of characters and situations.
“In the end it’s a bunch of adults playing make believe,” said Sorenson.
Black Dirt’s Improv has grown over the years, with the 2026 line up boasting about 30 members between the two troupes, many of whom travel from around the metro to practice and perform.
“It’s an honor to be something worth traveling for,” said Sorenson.
Black Dirt’s reach is a testament not only to its quality but longevity. Even during the COVID-19 Pandemic, Black Dirt held outdoor performances and has reestablished itself in the post-pandemic world.
“I don’t think people realize how many theater companies folded in that time,” said Sorenson.
When the Improv shows started in 2011, the goal was to “bring laughter and joy to the community, period,” said Sorenson, and that goal has not changed.
Tickets are $15 per show or $108 for a season pass and can be bought online at www.blackdirttheater.com/improv
