Once again, the Hastings Raiders Alpine Ski Team proved their grit and competed in single digit to below zero temps at the frosty Jack Zahr Memorial Race at Wild Mountain in Taylors Falls on January 15, 2024.

Jackson Reents took the victory for the boys race leading the Raiders to a 4th place finish overall. Cole Caturia continued his momentum from last week’s races finishing in 3rd, while Finn Caturia finished a solid 14th place. Axton Bauer, Will Bauer, and James McNamera added valuable points finishing in 33rd, 36th, and 40th places. Weston Chandler and James Samii scored the final Hastings points with 49th and 50th place finishes. Max Bauer and James Millhollin also raced varsity finishing in 55th and 60th places. Jadon Mike was the top JV skier with a 13th place finish and Nathan Schield close behind him in 14th and Lenox Bauer in 15th. Fischer Kaufmann placed 22nd and Sawyer Chandler was 26th in his second race. Henry Naber grabbed 31st place and he was followed by Jens Kaufmann, Jed Chamberlain and Matt Muench in 32nd, 33rd, and 35th place.

The Raider girls team finished in 5th place overall and was led by Kate Nowak who finished in 12th place. Kate was closely followed by Abbi Pelava in 13th place. Claire Caturia, Addison Maniak, and Claire Montgomery all had solid finishes of 40th, 41st, and 45th. Maddie Herdt, Maddie Paulson, and Lia Ferguson also contributed to the team with finishes of 51st, 54th, and 57th places. Alexa Loritz and Kylie Strausborger each had an issue on one of their runs but skied well on the other. Exchange student Khadija Wane continues to impress everyone with her skiing. This was the first race for 7th grader Evie Paulson. Said Coach Gergen of his newest racer, “Great job Evie! Once the first (race) is out of the way, the rest are a piece of cake!”

Coach Gergen went on to thank his Raider alumni for their continued help with racing and coaching the team before they head back to their respective schools for spring term, “Special thanks to Aaron Herber and Jacob Schield for acting as assistant starters and additional coaches of Hastings.”

Go Raiders!
