Hastings Family Service helped 240 children fill up brand new backpacks with school supplies for the upcoming school year.
The school supplies program is a staff favorite at Hastings Family Service. Children aren’t sure what to expect, but they walk in and see all the brightly colored backpacks. A friendly volunteer helps them fill one with everything they need. The kids leave confident and excited to start school.
“It was great to have the kids come into the building again this year to pick out their own backpack and supplies”, states Deana Dunning, cocoordinator of the school supply program. “It is amazing how something as simple as school supplies can impact the life of a child.”
The generous support of the community brought many smiles. According to Kelly Carter, cocoordinator of the school supply program, numerous individuals made it a point to use a specific grade supply list and purchase those items and others gave monetary donations that helped purchase the most needed items. A handful of organizations held school supply collections and drives to stock the shelves at HFS including Dugarel’s Bar & Grill, Smead Manufacturing, DCA Title, Edward JonesKelli Reitzel and Innovative Surfaces to name a few. Tony and Phyllis Reilly shared their ice cream machine to give the kids an extra special treat.
“Thank you to everyone who donated supplies and helped with distribution for this school year”, said Carter. “Because of you, kids will go off to school smiling, excited, and ready to learn!”
