Bail was set at $100,000 for a Hastings man charged with fleeing police Jan. 12.
Shawn Angel Brown, 51, was also faces charges of 3rd degree drug possession, driving after cancellation and possession of a dangerous weapon.
According to the criminal complaint, a Hastings Police Department officer followed a vehicle at 10:30 p.m. Jan. 12 after the driver tried to shield his face from the officer’s view when it passed in front of his vehicle. The vehicle, driven by Brown, then failed to stop at a stop sign at 15th Street West and Ramsey Street and then accelerated to 45 mph. The vehicle went eastbound on 15th Street and began swerving and drifting in the roadway, running over curbswhen making turns. Brown allegedly lost control of the vehicle twice and drove into yards. The vehicle was driving up to 45 mph in residential ne3ighborhoods, failing to stop at stop signs.
The vehicle was driving up to 80 mph when it got to Ravenna Trail, turning onto 200th Street. Just before it got to Hwy. 216, it pulled into a driveway, drove around the yard and went back onto 200th Street. Dakota County Sheriff’s Office deputies deployed stop sticks that the vehicle hit. Brown then lost control of the vehicle, which went into the ditch and struck a power pole, causing several large explosions, the complaint states. Brown allegedly tried to flee on foot but was taken into custody by officers.
A bag containing fentanyl and two containing methamphetamine were found in the vehicle. There were brass knuckles on the front seat.
A court appearance for Brown was set for Feb. 6.
