Martha M. Nygaard, age 78 of Hastings, died peacefully at home on Monday morning, June 13, 2022.

Martha Madeline Magdelina Becker, the daughter of Peter and Philomena (Meier) Becker, was born on April 26, 1944, in Hastings, Minnesota. Following her graduation from Hastings High School with the class of 1962, Martha was united in marriage to Carl Nygaard Jr. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Hastings. They were blessed with forty years of marriage and their “Magnificent Seven” children prior to his passing. Martha had a long time career in banking prior to being a Clerk of Courts for the First District Court where she worked until her retirement on June 1, 2007. Outside of work, Martha enjoyed gardening, canning, knitting, snowmobiling with Carl, and especially enjoyed playing cards. She truly loved her grandkids and great grandkids and cherished every moment they spent together. Martha was a longtime member of the VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210 Auxiliary and a volunteer with the funeral committee at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl; and by her son, John.

Martha is survived by children, the “Magnificent Seven”, Linda (Calvin) Held, Ronald Nygaard, Kevin (Charlene) Nygaard, Christine (Alan) Vettleson, Marie (Michael) Houtari, Darrin Nygaard, and Carla Nygaard; grandchildren, Jessica (Patrick) Schwarzhoff, Jacob Nygaard, Samantha Nygaard, Jacqueline Nygaard, Alexander (Calley) Nygaard, Holly Vettleson, Matthew (Ashley) Vettleson, Larissa Houtari, Aaron (Hannah) Houtari, Kelsey Nygaard, and Kallie Nygaard; great grandchildren, Raelyn, Alena, Jozie, Lily, Layla, Lucy, Liberty, Jacob Jr., LaVerna, GioVanni, Maximus, Octavia, Baby Boy Nygaard due the end of June/early July; and by many family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2022, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Hastings. Interment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Hastings.

Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings, and for one hour prior to the service at church on Saturday morning.
