Wrestling has success against some of the area’s top teams

The Hastings Raider wrestling program has been growing year after year, especially with the plethora of young ladies trying the sport. Hastings is one of the few programs in the state that has both a boys and girls wrestling team. The 2024-25 season is the first season that Hastings will have a full team of girls added to the boys.
The boys had four dual meets in two days last week. On Thursday, the Raiders took down Mahtomedi 57-17 and they thumped South St. Paul 60-6. Friday, they took down Holdingford 30-26 before they beat Apple Valley 34-23.
The girls took on South St. Paul defeating them 51-28 on Thursday. Friday, they fell to Apple Valley 21-50 and then they rebounded nicely against Holmen with a 47-21 win.
With the addition of the full girls’ team, logistics are still being worked out for tracking and reporting all individual results. Here is what we have for this week.

One thing to note is that scoring has changed for the 2024-25 wrestling season. These changes have been made at the national level and the Minnesota State High School League has approved/accepted all of the rule changes. Here is a summary of the scoring changes.
Takedowns: Wrestlers are awarded three points for a takedown, instead of two
Near falls: Wrestlers are awarded two points for maintaining control for two seconds, three points for three seconds, and four points for four seconds or more
Escapes: Wrestlers are awarded one point for escaping to the neutral position without reversing their opponent
Reversals: Wrestlers are awarded two points for reversing their opponent from the bottom to the top position
Technical fall: A wrestler wins five team points if they have a 15-point lead during the match
Injury: A wrestler wins five points if their opponent is injured, indicates an injury, or bleeds after the wrestler has earned four points for a near fall
