Ward 4 council seat opens with Lund’s resignation

Trevor Lund submitted his resignation as Ward 4 Hastings City Councilmember on Monday.

To get Lund’s replacement on the council dais as soon as possible, Mayor Mary Fasbender hastily added a resolution to Monday night’s city council agenda accepting the resignation.

Lund was first elected to the city council in 2016 and was re-elected in 2020. His term runs until Dec. 31, 2024.

“This afternoon, we received notice from Councilmember Lund about his resignation from city council effective July 10. He explained that in the six-plus years he’s been on the council, he’s in a different place in life now than he was before,” said City Administrator Dan Wietecha. “He’s extremely busy with work. It limits his ability to give the attention he’d like to the council.”

Lund has been absent from the last three council meetings.

Wietecha said the city will work to fill the position as soon as possible and will be posting specifics in the Public Notice section of the Hastings Journal and on the city website.

“If you’re interested and eligible, we want to talk to you,” he said.

Fellow councilmembers were sad to see Lund, who always provided perspective in debate, step down.

“I have always valued his input. He’s an incredibly intelligent person,” Tina Folch said.

“He definitely didn’t take make this decision quickly or abruptly,” said Lisa Leifeld. “Family does come first, even over your community service. I’m really proud of him for making this decision.”

“Trevor, we’ll miss you,” added Fasbender. “You have grown, and you have given, and you will be missed, but your children will love having you with them.”
