Scott Doran: Hastings High School Principal

Posted

Three years back, Scott Doran made a career move, transitioning from his previous position to become the principal at Hastings High School within ISD200. He is making remarkable contributions and aims to enhance the high school experience for all students.

Scott places students at the core of all his actions. He sees that teachers and staff align with the district's mission of prioritizing students in every aspect. Witnessing students flourish and delve into their interests within and beyond the classroom drives his inspiration. "Having spent 18 years in alternative education, I naturally root for the underdog! When students face obstacles that may hinder their success, it's time to support them wholeheartedly! Every student holds promise, and we are dedicated to assisting them in reaching their full potential," Mr. Doran expresses enthusiastically.

Scott shared a heartwarming story about a student who approached him, promising to send a letter. Despite facing personal challenges, the student expressed a desire to graduate a semester ahead. With the guidance of dedicated teachers and counselors, the student now aims to enroll in a trade school to support their family. This touching anecdote exemplifies the small yet impactful moments embodying " Raider Pride at HHS," recounts Scott.

Principal Doran is proud to work for Hastings Public Schools. He appreciates the strong and supportive culture at HHS, which allows the team to find success for each and every student. “This success may look different from student to student. It is our responsibility to help them identify what that means on an individual basis and then attain it”, he shares. "We have established a relatively fast pace for our students and staff at the high school. We are exploring methods to slow down and delve deeper into our work and studies. This approach will enhance the learning process and equip our students for their post-high school life. Additionally, we are keen on collaborating with local industries to offer students real-world experiences. Doran emphasizes the mutual benefits that these partnerships can bring."

Scott shares that when everyone can focus on student success, their efforts align, and any challenges can be overcome. “As a high school principal, I balance time between building management and educational leadership. When the building is running on all cylinders, we get to focus on innovation in the classroom, and that is where the magic happens.”

Scott’s favorite season is fall, followed closely by winter. He enjoys fishing and hunting with his three-year-old lab Derby. He and his wife enjoy traveling when they find time, where he might find a quiet hammock to catch a good crime thriller book.
