Letter to the Editor: Who do we want to represent us?

Recent events bring out a myriad of thoughts and emotions. It appears we are more divided into our echo chambers after every incident with no foreseeable way to come to a consensus. Our American Constitution and judicial framework is based on the premise of “consent of the governed”. Meaning we, as a society, agree to follow the laws of the land. Chaos occurs when that consent is disrupted. We are at a point where that consent is seriously in jeopardy. The contortions the courts and legislators have to twist themselves into to protect a morally corrupt group that is out for nothing more than how much power and wealth they can acquire is pathetic and disappointing.
Look no further than the nonstop media echo chamber over the awful debate performance of
President Biden. Where is the nonstop fretting over the performance of former President Trump and the nonstop blatant lies and bigotry that he spewed? As Jimmy Fallon pointed out July 8, the media keeps calling for one of the
presidential candidates to drop out of the race, but it's not the convicted felon.
Questions of honesty and integrity need to be discussed. Until we have that frank discussion, this country's decline in credibility by its own citizenry will continue to grow. One instance that demonstrates my concern came on Inauguration Day 2017. Trump claimed that “I had the largest crowd of anyone” and then required his press secretary Sean Spicer and others to push the same lie, regardless of photo evidence of the untruth. That was the first official day of his administration, and he continues today, spewing untruths daily. Honesty and integrity used to mean something. I fervently pray that we all wake up and take a long, hard look at ourselves and who we want to represent us as Americans. Because right now, without faith in facts, I fear there will be no America to believe in or defend soon.
