John Dewall: Horticulture Educator HHS

Posted

How many individuals do you know who accepted a job straight out of college and have remained in that position for 43 years? ISD200 is fortunate to have one of those remarkable educators in Mr. John Dewall! Since his start in Hastings in 1980, John has dedicated over four decades to nurturing and educating our children.

And growing is his specialty! Mr. Dewall has been an amazing teacher of horticulture in Hastings and teaches much, much more than just growing plants!

“Being a role model and being able to help my students develop emotionally and intellectually is one of the best things about my job. I enjoy my students and colleagues…each day is a new experience,” says Mr. Dewall.

John, who was raised in Stillwater, recognized the Hastings School District as an ideal starting point for his career. Thanks to educators like Mr. Dewall, our district has continued to excel in providing an exceptional learning environment for students.

Throughout 43 years, his expertise requirements have evolved. He elaborates, “Initially, I taught agribusiness to agricultural students, which shifted towards production agriculture. Currently, I focus on full-time horticulture classes”.

Apart from teaching classes during the day, John dedicated decades to nurturing and motivating hundreds of Raiders on a highly successful cross-country ski team. Through his coaching and unwavering commitment, he instilled a lasting passion for skiing and health in numerous Hastings athletes.

John finds inspiration from his students and family. When he's not teaching our fortunate students about gardening, you'll discover him tending to his own garden. In the winter, he stays active by cross-country skiing whenever there's snow!

John, we appreciate your years of commitment to our district. Our schools, students, and community have greatly benefited from your dedication. We are fortunate to have you!
