The Raider Girls Basketball team had two games last week, first a wild win over conference foe South St. Paul 56-44 and then a tough loss at Kasson-Mantorville 49-68. That puts them at 6-1 in the Metro East Conference (MEC) and 11-6 overall.
Against the Packers, Hastings hopped out to an early lead and held on in a bit of a wild game. There were a lot of missed shots on both ends of the floor and a lot of scrambles that resulted in jump balls and weird possessions. Hastings took a 30-16 lead into the halftime break. Half of the Packers 16 points came from free throws setup by the aggressive playstyle of the Raiders. The second half saw a few of the Raiders bench players mixed in with the starters and shots started to drop for the Packers. Hastings ultimately won 56-44.
Haley Strain led the Raiders in scoring with 29 points and 19 rebounds. Strain was able to use her height to capitalize on the mostly diminutive size of the Packers lineup. Keagan McVicker scored 11, Jillian McTague had eight, Rachel Notch four and Violet Schult three.
At Kasson-Mantorville, the Komets turned the tables on Hastings, keeping them frustrated most of the second half. The first half was a lot of back and forth and the game was tied at 31 heading into the break. The second half saw the Komets take control, outscoring Hastings 37-18 for a 68-49 final, giving Hastings just their sixth loss of the season.
McVicker led Hastings with 12 points. Strain was kept out of the paint much of the night offensively, she scored only eight while grabbing 18 rebounds. McTague scored eight points again and three Raiders scored seven, Brooke Mace, Kate Ruder and Notch.
The girls have nine games left in the season with eight of them being against MEC foes. They host Two Rivers on Jan. 31, then they have a three-game road trip, Feb. 4 at Hill-Murray, Feb 6 at Simley with all three games listed for a 6:30 p.m. tip. Then finally, a trip to Mounds View on Feb. 10 for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
