The Hastings Alpine Ski Team traveled to Afton Alps on Thursday to compete in a conference meet against conference rivals and public Minneapolis schools. The event was marked by cold temperatures and excellent snow conditions, setting the stage for the team's first points race for the conference championship.
Girls Team Results
The girls' team secured a third-place finish, trailing Hill-Murray and Minneapolis Southwest. Kate Nowak led the team with an impressive fifth-place finish, while Alexa Loritz also cracked the top 20. Other valuable contributors included Claire Caturia, Addison Maniak, Claire Montgomery, and Maddie Herdt, who all finished between 31st and 38th. Amelia Montgomery, Maddie Paulson, seventh-grader Marley Schield, and Lia Ferguson rounded out the scoring for the Hastings girls.
Exchange student Talea Kummer from Germany impressed with the fastest first run in the girls' JV category but unfortunately crashed during her second run, taking her out of the competition.
Boys Team Results
The boys' team claimed fourth place behind Hill-Murray, Washburn, and St. Thomas Academy. Sophomore James McNamara led the way with a fifth-place finish, followed closely by senior Gavin Molitor in sixth and senior Finn Caturia in tenth. Axton Bauer placed 22nd, with eighth-grader Leighton Stoffel finishing 32nd. Fellow eighth-grader Max Bauer secured 43rd, with Weston Chandler close behind in 45th. Will Bauer, Henry Naber, and James Samii completed the Hastings boys' lineup.
The boys' JV team performed exceptionally well, finishing second overall. Eighth-grader Lenox Bauer led the JV team, with Nathan Schield, Jadon Mike, and Fischer Kaufman all placing in the top 15. The rest of the JV team, composed mostly of middle school athletes, showed promise for the program’s future. Contributors included Tor Ronning, Mark Gerdes, Luke Retka, Henrik Novak, Nathan Sinclair, Henry Featherstone, and Alex Morgan.
Upcoming Events
The team faces a busy week ahead, featuring all-day invitational races on Monday and Friday, along with two night races at Welch Village. Tuesday was a significant day for the team, as it hosts the JV championship race and Senior Recognition Night at Welch Village, we will have the recap of that in the next edition.
