After a split in their matches Thursday night, Hastings easily defeated Henry Sibley 78-3, winning all but one match. The match against the top ranked team in AA did not go as well, as the Raiders fell to a powerful Simley team, 70-6. The Raiders won two matches in the meet, both by 3-2 scores. On Tuesday, the Raiders drew another top opponent when they travelled to Stillwater to take on the ponies.
“They’re one of the best teams in the state. They’re ranked right now, number one in AAA, so we’re starting our season with two of the better teams in the state. So that’s gonna be really tough. Much like the meets Thursday night, just see if we can take the fight to them. You know, they have a lot of very tough kids on their team. But let’s see if we can take the fight to them for six minutes,” Head Coach Tim Haneburg said previewing the Stillwater meet.
After the Simley loss, would Hastings be able to match up with a top ranked team? Or would it be another tough night for the Raiders? The young Raiders team was much more competitive against Stillwater, showing they were up to the task. Hastings won six of 14 matches against Stillwater. At the lower weight classes, the match was extremely tight. In the classes between 106 and 160, Stillwater outscored Hastings by just one point, 24-23. The difference in the match was the strength of Stillwater’s top weight classes.
