United Way of Hastings settling in at Branchline Church

The United Way of Hastings has found a new home inside Branchline Church at 518 East Second Street, a move Executive Director Theresa Chatelle says is saving the nonprofit $20,000 a year.
The decision to relocate was driven by practicality and cost savings. The organization had been occupying a much larger building on its own, which no longer made sense for the size of its staff and operations.
“It was just me in a big building,” Chatelle said. “This space makes more fiscal sense, and it’s a win for both us and Branchline. We’re paying a modest rent, which helps them, and in return we get a lot of usable space.”
The partnership has also proven functional. The church’s underutilized space during the weekdays gives United Way the flexibility it needs, especially for its Food for Kids program. “We wheel carts of food in and out regularly, and this space gives us easy access and storage,” said Chatelle.
More importantly, the savings are being put to work in the community. This year, United Way launched a new “basic needs closet” initiative across local schools—from preschool through high school. These closets are stocked with essentials like shoes, clothing, shampoo, toothpaste, and other hygiene items.
“Kids are coming to school without these basics,” Chatelle said. “Now we can step in and quietly provide what they need so they can feel comfortable and confident at school.”
In addition to the move and new programs, United Way is gearing up for its annual fall banner campaign, the organization’s largest fundraiser. Businesses and individuals can sponsor a banner for $1,000, which is then displayed in front of their business or at a chosen location. Donations start as low as $250, with past sponsors contributing up to $40,000.
“It’s a great way to show your support for the work we’re doing locally,” Chatelle said.

With a smaller office and a bigger impact, the United Way of Hastings is focused on doing more with less—and doing it right in the heart of the community.
