A driver who led Hastings Police on a high-speed chase Monday night was rescued Tuesday morning from the Mississippi River.
According to police, a traffic stop on a car with no front or rear plates was initiated at 10th and Tyler Streets at about 8:15 p.m. The driver reportedly had one passenger in the vehicle.
A records check showed that the driver did not have a valid license and possibly had active arrest warrants.
The driver then sped away from the traffic stop, according to police. Hastings Police pursued the vehicle into Nininger, and the high speed chase reportedly was ended for safety reasons.
The vehicle reportedly entered a cornfield off of 132nd Street and drove about a quarter-mile in. The driver and passenger reportedly left the vehicle, and the passenger came out of the cornfield. However, the driver didn’t. K-9 units and a helicopter were used to search for the driver.
Tuesday morning, the driver was seen along the banks of the Mississippi River nearby. When police attempted to apprehend him, he reportedly swam into the river.
The Hastings Fire Department and Dakota County Water Rescue took the man into custody.
