Spiral Co-op Celebrates 47 years

Last weekend Spiral Co-op celebrated its 47th year anniversary. The cooperative grocery store began in 1979 with 66 initial members in the old National Guard Armory.
Since then, the co-op has outgrown its initial venue and currently boasts some 2,500 members, according to Operations and Marketing Manager Cassie Raway.
Members receive voting rights for the store discounts and the ability to order items not on store shelves or in bulk, which is a popular option for many members.
“We’re able to carry products that our membership and our shoppers want. We’re not beholden to any one individual big entity. Basically, if enough people ask for something and we have the space, we bring it in,” said Raway.
According to Raway, members regularly take advantage of bulk purchases like 25-pound bags of oats and flour, cases of grapes and oranges, and spices during sausage and canning season.
A continued point of confusion around the store is that anyone can shop there. While members get periodic discounts, voting rights and the ability to place special orders, anyone can shop there.
“We are always trying to get more folks to understand that Spiral Food Co-op is for everyone,” said Raway.
