Pickleball fans and curious newcomers alike are invited to hit the courts for a special event hosted by the Hastings Pickleball Association on Saturday, Apr. 26. The event, held at the Hastings Pickleball Courts from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., is all about bringing the community together and introducing more people to the fast-growing sport of pickleball.
“This is really about promoting pickleball to the community,” explained Steve Black, a representative of the Hastings Pickleball Association. “We’ll have something for everyone, from open play and clinics for beginners to mini tournaments for more experienced players.”
The afternoon will offer a casual, festive atmosphere that’s open to all ages and skill levels. For those who are brand new to the sport, instructors will be on hand to provide lessons and guide players through the basics of the game. Equipment, including paddles and balls, will be provided for anyone who doesn’t have their own gear.
“No equipment necessary,” said Black. “We’ll have everything people need to get started, including instructors for the lessons and clinics. All you have to do is show up.”
In addition to introducing residents to the game, the association hopes the event will help raise awareness of the group and the vibrant pickleball community that’s growing in Hastings.
For players who already have a few games under their belt, small mini tournaments will give them a chance to test their skills in a more competitive, but still friendly, format.
The event will also include some light refreshments, and to make the most of the spring season, there will be a fire ring set up for roasting marshmallows. Black noted that the emphasis is on creating a relaxed, welcoming vibe for all attendees.
“We really want to make it a fun afternoon,” he said. “Whether you’ve heard of pickleball and never tried it, or you’re someone who’s been playing for years, it’s a great chance to get involved and meet others in the community.”
Though the event is aimed at adults and older youth, Black noted that younger participants around middle school age, roughly ten years and up, can usually pick up the game quickly and are more than welcome to participate.
One thing to keep in mind is that there is no alternate date in case of poor weather, so the hope is that Mother Nature cooperates.
“We’ve got everything planned, so we’re just crossing our fingers for good weather,” Black said with a laugh.
The event is free and open to the public. Whether you're just stopping by to watch or planning to jump on the court, the Hastings Pickleball Association is eager to welcome community members to learn more about the game that’s become a national sensation.
“This is a great way to see what pickleball is all about and to meet the people who play it here in Hastings,” Black added. “It’s fun, it’s social, and it’s a sport you can play for a lifetime.”
For those unable to attend but interested in learning more, the Hastings Pickleball Association frequently holds events and is always looking for new members. Information on upcoming activities can often be found through community postings or by reaching out to the association directly.
And for those who do plan to attend, don’t forget your tennis shoes, and maybe bring an appetite for marshmallows, too.
