Meet new ISD 200 School Board member Elaine Mikel-Mulder

The ISD 200 School Board elected Elaine Mikel-Mulder as the newest school board member. She is currently expected to be sworn into the school board in May. Mikel-Mulder was selected to fill the empty seat following the death of Jenny Wiederholt-Pine and will remain on the board through the end of the year, replaced by the winner of the special election in November.
Mikel-Mulder took the time to answer the following questions about joining the school board.

Can you introduce yourself, tell us when you do, what you do for fun, where you're from?
Elaine K. Mikel-Mulder. I am a mother of two, with a phenomenal husband. I am a corporate, estate planning and probate attorney at Best & Flanagan, LLP. I like to explore new cultures and lift heavy weights. I’m from Hastings! I love this place.

Why did you want to join the school board?
I had people in the community that know me well encourage me to run. I am passionate about education. It is the breeding ground (outside of the home) for growth. Flourishing communities are birthed in flourishing educational systems. Further, I am eager to enter the discussion that the community is having about our district- our expectations, goals, vision, etc. I enjoy exploring different educational philosophies- especially those that encourage students in critical thinking. I really think the best thing we can do for our young people is provide them with a space to grow in their ability to critically think about and ENJOY the world around them.

Are you going to be running for this seat in November?
We will have to see if I bring value to the Board. That is my main priority and what the community deserves. If I feel that there are others that can bring more value pursuant to what is required at this time- I may not run. I also must see that my family and I can handle the commitment on top of my already demanding job. I want to ensure I can bring my all to the Board.

What do you think the biggest issues are facing the district?
Divisiveness and a lack of shared vision. I know the current board is committed to seek unity and a common vision, I only hope to assist in that directive.

Is there anything you would like to see changed in the district?
I think the better question is “Is there anything that the community would like to see changed in the district.” I carry my own opinions, but at large, the community voice wins. The Board’s efforts are only as strong and purposeful as its support from a communicative and collaborative community. There are many variables that contribute to an educational system- the balancing of which is not easy. I hope that the community understands this and helps to shepherd the district to a stronger future.
