A Hastings man was charged by summons for fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle in Dakota County Court on Monday.
Derek Thomas Lange, 36, could be sentencing to up to three years in jail and fined between $1,500-$5,000 for the alleged felony from July 9.
According to the statement of probably cause in the criminal complaint, officers were called to a residence in the 400 block of Hayes Drive about a dispute. A woman at the residence said he had gotten into an argument with Lange. Lange reportedly walked out of the home, and Hastings Police Department officers asked him to come talk to them. Lange then allegedly got into a running car and drove off.
Police followed the vehicle westbound on 36th Street West with emergency lights and sirens activated. One squad car pulled into an intersection on 36th Street West to try to set up a perimeter. “The defendant nearly t-boned the officer and sped off,” the complaint states.
Lange then reportedly turned onto Riverwood Drive north at speeds near 90 mph. The car drove east on Hwy. 47 and then north on Vermillion Street at speeds up to 100 mph, swerving within the lane, driving on the shoulder to pass other vehicles. It also ran a red light.
Police terminated the chase due to safety concerns.
