The Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association honored Hastings Journal reporter Bruce Karnick with its prestigious Media Award at the Minnesota High School League State Wrestling Tournament Saturday. The award recognizes media members who go above and beyond in their coverage of high school wrestling at the community, regional, or state level.
Karnick was nominated by Hastings wrestling coach Tim Haneberg, who subtly asked him for past stories and award history before revealing the exciting news.
“When he called to tell me I won, it was a great surprise,” Karnick said. “It’s an incredible honor to be recognized by the coaches and to have my name up on the Jumbotron at the Xcel Energy Center. Hearing the Hastings fans cheer for me was really cool.”
Karnick, a dedicated sports journalist and talented photographer, has covered Hastings athletics for five years, building strong relationships with the community. His philosophy centers on highlighting young athletes in a positive light, celebrating their efforts, and telling their stories with enthusiasm.
“The Hastings sports community is special,” he said. “The families and coaches embrace me as part of their sports family, and I love sharing the achievements of these kids. To be recognized by the association makes it even more meaningful.”
Over the past five years, Karnick has particularly enjoyed covering the wrestling program, documenting behind-the-scenes moments at state tournaments, and capturing the heart of the sport. His commitment to local sports journalism has left a lasting impact on athletes, coaches, and families.
His approach to interviews and storytelling was shaped early on by a lesson from a high school football coach: always speak positively about opponents, teammates, and one’s own performance. This mindset has influenced the way Karnick covers sports, focusing on growth, learning, and the dedication of young athletes.
“I’m really honored and humbled by this award,” Karnick said. “It’s a reminder of why I love what I do—celebrating these incredible kids and their hard work.”
The Hastings High School Wrestling program congratulated Karnick in a Facebook post: “Congratulations to Bruce Karnick on winning the MWCA Media Award. We thank you for everything you do for our wrestlers and our community athletes year around.”
The Hastings Journal congratulates Bruce Karnick on this well-deserved recognition and looks forward to more of his outstanding coverage of local sports.
“Bruce has a real knack for telling stories. He loves what he does, and it shows,” said Hastings Journal Publisher John McLoone. “We’re proud to have him on staff.”
