Nathan Barker, a senior at Hastings High School, was recently recognized as the Rotary Student of the Month, an honor highlighting his outstanding achievements and leadership both in and out of the classroom. During a recent meeting for the Hastings Area Rotary Club, Nathan shared his journey, passions, and future aspirations.
A Proud Family Legacy
Nathan opened by expressing deep gratitude for the award and spoke about the significance of his family name.
“For me, a lot of this comes from my family. Barkers show up, work hard, and always support others,” he said. This pride in his heritage extends to his aspirations to join the performers' union under his given name.
A Multifaceted Student Leader
In addition to excelling academically, Nathan is deeply involved in various activities, including show choir, theater, Link Crew, peer helpers, swim and dive, and youth government. “Being part of these groups has helped me grow as a person and a leader,” he shared.
Nathan takes on a significant leadership role in show choir as a dance captain and has been part of the varsity group, Riverside Company, for all four years of high school. He described his involvement as a defining experience, saying, “I’ve found not only a passion for performing but also lifelong friendships and a sense of purpose.”
A Moment That Defined His Future
Nathan recalled a pivotal moment during his sophomore year at the Show Choir Nationals in Nashville, where he performed on the iconic stage of the Grand Ole Opry.
“Standing in the circle where legends like Dolly Parton and Taylor Swift performed, I realized that performing was my true calling,” he said. This realization was further cemented when he received the Outstanding Male Performer award at the competition.
Preparing for the Next Stage
Nathan is set to attend Minnesota State University Mankato, where he plans to major in musical theater performance. Reflecting on his college search, he explained how Mankato’s welcoming environment influenced his decision. “It just felt right,” he said.
Balancing Passions and Priorities
Despite a packed schedule, Nathan excels at balancing his many commitments. He credits his ability to lead with empathy and accountability. “I’ve learned that leadership is about listening and being willing to admit when you’re wrong,” he shared.
A Lasting Legacy
Teachers and mentors spoke highly of Nathan’s impact. Mr. Warren, Hastings High School choir director, praised Nathan’s talent and character: “He is a role model for what we want every student to be. His leadership and dependability leave a lasting impression.”
As Nathan prepares for the next chapter of his life, his dedication to his craft and community ensures a bright future. His final words to the Rotary Club captured his optimism and gratitude: “Performing is my passion, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.”
The Rotary Students of the Month are seniors nominated by staff at Hastings High School for each month of the school year. The selected student is honored at a Rotary meeting on Thursday mornings where the student, their parents and the nominating staff are treated to breakfast and the student meets local community business members. The student receives a scholarship to help with post-secondary education needs.
