Sunday, April 6, was more than just a sunny spring afternoon at Hastings Public House, it was a day dedicated to showing real appreciation for Hastings’ first responders.
The event was hosted by Nicole Sindelar, owner of the Hastings Golf Club and Hastings Public House, and Tatia Nelson, owner of The Busted Nut Bar & Grill. What started last year as a response to a tragedy has now grown into an annual show of community support.
“When the two police officers and the firefighter were shot and killed in Burnsville last year, it really hit home,” said Sindelar. “One of the EMTs, Adam, used to work here in Hastings. He was really looked up to by the guys at our fire department. It was just awful.”
Moved by the loss, Sindelar and Nelson organized a fundraiser last year and were able to send checks to the families of the fallen. The overwhelming support from the community inspired them to do it again, this time keeping the focus local.
“We had over 150 people show up this year,” Sindelar said. “People were generous. They were spending money, buying raffle tickets, bidding in the silent auction, buying tumblers with department logos, cookies, popcorn, you name it.”
Entry to the event was $20 and included beer and wine, and the event featured raffles and silent auctions. It was more than just a fundraiser; it was a chance for residents to connect with and thank the people who protect them.
Funds raised won’t just be dropped into a general fund. Nicole and Tatia are meeting with leaders from Hastings Police, Fire, and EMS to determine what each department specifically needs.
“We want to give them something that actually improves their day-to-day lives,” said Sindelar. “Like the fire department, we’ve heard they’re in need of updated workout equipment. That kind of thing. We’re meeting with the departments next week to finalize the details.”
The final number of what was raised was not yet available.
“People are still sending money in support of our first responders, which is great, but that also means we are not able to provide a final number yet,” added Sindelar.
The event was made possible through support from the community and local businesses. Champion sponsors included The Busted Nut Bar & Grill, The Front Line Foundation, Hastings Public House, Merit Electric Co., Moody Family Law, PLLC, and Radke & Mohrhauser, LLC. Additional support came from Hastings Ford, Hastings Chrysler Dodge Jeep & Ram, and Trophies Plus.
In a time when public service can often feel thankless, this event was a reminder that Hastings sees and values its first responders. And thanks to leaders like Sindelar and Nelson, that appreciation is more than just words, it’s action.
