I’m officially halfway vaccinated against COVID-19.

Actually, I’m somewhere between 55 percent and 92 percent vaccinated after this shot, depending on the study to read. I had time winding my way through the line to read the literature on the Pfizer vaccine as I awaited the needle last week. The study that said you’re only a little over halfway immune after shot one apparently only reached the point where that was their conclusion. They proved it was 55 percent and that was good enough for them. I kind of did science projects that way in school, and I was rewarded with a lot of C-plusses on my report cards.

A study in Israel showed the level of immunity at more than 90 percent after the first shot.

I’m going to take their word for it, because they worked a lot harder, and they probably showed their work when they turned in this important assignment.

I’m halfway to my next shot, and I’m eager to get it.

I want COVID-19 in my rearview mirror. With the number of people choosing not to get these shots, I fear that it will take some time until that happens.

I’m actually surprised at how many people are the new “anti-vaxxers.” You’ve got people generally at the opposite ends of the political spectrum preaching not to get this shot, and that’s what’s going to keep COVID-19 alive and people dying from it. It’s that simple.

We’re being told that we have to keep wearing masks and socially distancing to continue to keep COVID-19 at bay. At some point, it’s only going to stay alive because of people refusing the vaccine. People of compromised immunity are obviously more likely to get seriously sick from this virus, so maybe not everyone needs to get it. But, if you want to see your elderly parents or grandparents or friends, it’s irresponsible to be the one spreading this.

That’s going to be the end of my preaching. I’m fairly confident that a month from now, COVID-19 isn’t going to be my problem, and I’m looking forward to that day. I’ll wear masks when I’m asked to but not when I don’t have to. I won’t duck every time someone sneezes, and I won’t fear going out in public. You do what you want and keep this thing alive. That’s your choice. You won’t be hurting me.

I know what we all went through in the last 12 months, and I’m not going to do that anymore.
