In the final session of a four-visit residency, CLIMB Theatre returns to Kennedy Elementary School in Hastings with its interactive theatre-based programming on Friday, May 12.
This year, CLIMB has brought both plays and customizable classes to Kennedy Elementary. Through collaboration with local teachers, CLIMB’s team developed 3 sessions of classes teaching empathy, resiliency, and self-regulation tailored specifically to Kennedy. These fun classes include a variety of games, activities, and skits to better engage students with social-emotional learning live in the classroom.
“We are so fortunate to have CLIMB Theatre join our school and our classroom. They do a wonderful job of keeping kids engaged and giving them practical solutions for solving big problems,” said Katie Regenfuss, Kennedy kindergarten teacher.
Earlier this year, CLIMB brought two plays live to Kennedy Elementary School. On January 24, the kindergarten through 2nd graders saw Polka Dot Shoes, and 3rd through 4th graders saw Abby’s Empathy Project. Both plays taught students empathy skills and helped students to be aware of and sensitive to other people’s feelings and perspectives.
CLIMB’s interactive programming allows students in the audience to practice CLIMB’s A.R.E.A.S. (Accountability, Resiliency, Empathy, Advocacy, and Self-Regulation) and help the characters work through tough social situations.
This programming is provided in part through funding from charitable gaming in Hastings. CLIMB has partnerships with both Pub 55 and Bar Draft House in Hastings, and the money raised through meat raffles, e-tabs, and pull tabs is used to support programming specifically in Hastings.
CLIMB Theatre is a youth-centered organization that uses theatre to teach social-emotional learning in a way that is intentionally intersectional. Based out of Inver Grove Heights, MN, the touring company brings programming to schools, libraries, and more across the Midwest. Their mission is to inspire and propel people towards acts that benefit themselves, others, and their community.
