Bernatz hits 1,000th point, McVicker closing in on milestone

One Hastings basketball player hit a milestone Friday night and another will hit that same achievement in games to come.
On the boys team, senior point guard Owen Bernatz scored his 1,000th point on Friday night. Girls junior point guard Keagan McVicker needs just 48 points to reach 1,000 points in her Raider career.
The Hastings boys fell to 2-2 in Metro East Conference play with a pair of losses last week. The girls team split its two games and is 2-1 in Metro East action. Both teams are 7-6 overall.

Boys fall to Mahtomedi and South St. Paul
After jumping out to a 2-0 start in conference play, the Hastings boys team had a rough week on the road, losing at Mahtomedi 61-48 Tuesday and at South St. Paul by a 94-76 margin Friday. Hastings returns home for three straight games, Friday against Two Rivers, Tuesday, Jan. 23 against St. Paul and Hill-Murray comes to town for a Thursday, Jan. 25 game.
Bernatz led all scorers with 26 points against Mahtomedi and snared a team-high nine rebounds, while also coming up with six steals. Matthew Foss scored 10 points to go with eight boards and six steals. Kellen Nuyten had nine points, while Marlow Strain added three.
Mahtomedi jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first half of the game.
Hastings was within six against South St. Paul but lost ground in the second half.
Bernatz and Kyan Esterby each chipped in 19 points in the effort, and Matthew Foss had 16. West Schult scored eight, Nuyten had six, Payton Dean scored five and Lukas Foss added three. Schult also had six assists and five steals.

Girls get win at home
The Hastings girls are one of three Metro East teams with 2-1 league marks (Hill-Murray and Simley are the others), trailing first place Mahtomedi, 4-0.
Hastings had a rough night Jan. 9 at Mahtomedi, falling 69-37 before returning to the friendly home court for a 58-30 win over South St. Paul on Friday.
McVicker scored a team-high 11 points and also had seven steals in the effort against Mahtomedi. Haley Strain added eight points and 11 rebounds, while Emma Bakker scored six, Sophia Swanson and Mara Jackson had three apiece, Violet Schult scored two, while Kayleigh Giesen and Lindsey Wagner each had a point.
Hastings scored 29 points in each half to bury South St. Paul. McVicker set the pace with 16 points, five assists and five steals. Strain had 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Bakker scored 10 points.
A lot of Raiders joined in the scoring action: Rachel Notch had six, Wagner had three and Alyssa Leos, Jillian McTague and Piper Brockman each had two points.
On the season, McVicker (16.5 points per game), Strain (12.7) and Bakker (10.3) are all averaging double figures per game.
