A weekly reflection from a memeber of the Hastings clergy

Our life mirror

Many of us look in the mirror in the morning to see if we are presentable to the public we encounter the rest of the day. I don’t know about you, but sometimes my mirror seems a little rough. It seems to reveal a few more wrinkles and few more blemishes every time I face it. My mirror can reveal things I had never seen before or things I’ve successfully overlooked for years.

Now if you’ll allow me, I’d like to ask you to shift a bit and see that God has given us a “Life Mirror” to look into daily also.

James 1:23–25 (NIV) Anyone who listens to the word (The Bible) but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.

God describes the Bible as a mirror for us to gaze into and hopefully remember what we saw. Now it may not be a perfect reflection of who we are at the time, but it is the reflection God has in store for those who follow Him. This improved version of us is what God has designed for us to become. We may not be there yet, but we can aspire to this image of joy, peace, compassion, mercy and forgiveness. God also promises us in the Bible, that it’s not our great efforts that reshape us, but it is His willingness to work through us.

Tomorrow morning, maybe when you awake, open your Bible to the New Testament book of John and see the life of Jesus as a future reflection of what He hopes for you to become like. See His reflection in your life mirror and remember the image you saw when you get to your breakfast table, your workplace and your friendship group. God promises that we will ultimately be blessed in what we do. Have fun.
