Hastings School-Based Therapists, United Way partner on connection strategies for families

In many cases, mental health begins in the home.

Two of Canvas Health’s school-based therapists, Ali Ryan and Carissa Montgomery, recently led a project at their Hastings schools to help encourage connection time for families. They gave each family a book entitled “The Magical Yet” by Lorena Alvarez as well as a custom designed bookmark detailing benefits and steps for a good bedtime routine. The books and bookmarks were funded through a grant from United Way of Hastings.

“I think it’s great that we’re able to offer a small gift to families and along with it, give them a simple, tangible strategy they can use to support connection and attachment. With all that caregivers have to juggle, it can be difficult to maintain family rhythms and routines. This gesture offers a reminder to continue making time for the small moments,” said Ryan.

Canvas Health’s schoolbased mental health program (TAP) provides on-site mental health services to students who may not otherwise be able to access mental health services because of ability to pay, transportation, or difficulty scheduling and keeping appointments. School-based mental health services include diagnostic assessments and therapy services. Offered at multiple schools in the Twin Cities metro area, the program is a collaborative effort between school psychologists, school social workers, teachers and multiple mental health providers.

Ali Ryan is a School-Based Therapist at Kennedy Elementary and Christa McAuliffe Elementary Schools. Carissa Montgomery is a School-Based Therapist at Pinecrest Elementary School and Hastings Middle School.
