It was a tough week for the Hastings boys basketball team. They scored 177 points in two games. Unfortunately, their opponents’ point tally was 180.
The Raiders lost at Coon Rapids in overtime, 90-88, Tuesday night and fell to Cottage Grove Park, 90-89, at home on Thursday.
The Raiders took a four-point lead into halftime against Coon Rapids but were outscored 32-28 in the second half. Coon Rapids snuck out the overtime victory. The Raiders had a hard time stopping Jerry Freeman, who scored 32 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, recorded seven assists and four steals to pace the home team. The Raiders also finished with 29 turnovers.
As a team, the Raiders hit on 32-76 field goal attempts and were 14-35 from three-point range. Hastings was 10-12 from the free throw line. The Raiders held a slim 44-43 rebounding margin on the night.
The Raiders had a nice scoring distribution. Kellen Nuyten scored 24 points, while Matthew Foss scored 20, connecting on five three-pointers. Kyan Esterby scored 15 points, while Owen Bernatz had 13, Weston Schult had 9, Marlowe Strain had 3 and Payton Dean and Lukas Foss had two apiece.
Matthew Foss grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Raiders, and Schult dished out 10 assists. Esterby and Nuyten each had three steals.
Bernatz had another big game in the parents’ night contest against Cottage Grove Park. He finished with 33 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in the nailbiter finish.
Nuyten and Matthew Foss each had 11 points, Schult scored eight, Lukas Foss seven, Dean six and Strain three.
Schult directed the offense with nine assists.
As a team, Hastings shot the ball well and connected on 32-55 field goals, 12-24 three-pointers and 13-18 free throws.
Tayvion Stewart led Park with 23 points, while AJ Kennedy and Anthony Giadyu had 14 each.
Hastings plays at Woodbury Thursday with a 7 p.m. tip.
After taking a couple days off for the Christmas holiday, the Raiders host their Holiday Tournament. The Raider boys take to the court at 5:15 Thursday, Dec. 28 for their first game against Irondale. Also participating are Prescott and St. Louis Park. Boys games are at either 1:45 p.m. or 5:15 p.m.
The Raiders are 3-3 in non-conference play.
