Spikers on the upswing

The Hastings Raider volleyball team is making steady measurable improvements under first year head coach Elizabeth Curran. Last year, the Raiders finished 122. This year, Hastings has already won two games along with taking many of the games to four or five matches and losing the final match 1513 or 1715. Going the full distance in a game is a testament to the perseverance and skills being taught by the head coach, and the future of Hastings volleyball looks bright under Coach Curran.

The Raiders faced North St. Paul on Sept. 20. This game was a prime example of the improvements made by the girls on this team. The first two sets were incredibly close and fun to watch with North taking the first set 2520 and Hastings rallying back to take the second 2521. Set three North won 259. Hastings rebounded perfectly to win the fourth set 2522 to force the tie breaking match.

The tiebreaker match was intense with the lead going back and forth. Hastings took the lead 1514 and the room fell silent. One more point and the match was Hastings’, and the Raiders were serving. Tartan returned the serve well and a quick volley ensued with Tartan winning the point. The set was tied at 15. At this point in the game, it now comes down to the first team to win two consecutive points. Tartan won the next point and went up 1615. The service of the final point was good, and Hastings returned the shot cleanly. The Titans setup for a spike and Hastings was ready, both sets of players jumped and BLOCKED! The official’s whistle sounded, and they awarded the point to Tartan for the win. Hastings had made a clean block, but the official claimed the blockers for Hastings had touched the net. Everyone in attendance was in disbelief, but that was the call of the trained official and that is how the night ended. Hastings fell 32 in an extremely entertaining display of volleyball.

Mahtomedi came to town on Sept. 22 and defeated the Raiders in three straight sets.

Up next for the Raiders is Two Rivers on Sept. 27 at home at 7 p.m., then a trip to HillMurray on Sept. 29, also at 7 p.m. Next week, the girls are away for both games, Oct. 3 at St. Paul Harding and Oct. 5 at South St. Paul.
