The Dakota County Sheriff’s Department received reports of a submerged vehicle in the Mississippi River from fishermen seeing it on their fish finders / sonar, so a dive team was sent to investigate. The waters of the Mississippi River carry a lot of sediment and visibility was nonexistent for the divers who managed to hook up to the car for extraction in one shot.
The vehicle was found approximately 150 feet from the boat launch located near the Wakota 494 bridge in South St. Paul according to Sgt. Matt Wayne who oversees the Dakota County Dive Team.
“This case is still currently under investigation but there are some things we are able to share. We know it is a 1986 Mercury Cougar and it was reported stolen in 1989. At this time, we are still waiting on any reports St. Paul may still have on the vehicle theft report. A lot of the times vehicles that are stolen are later dumped in the water at the boat launches. Since my time on the Dakota County Dive Team, 16 years, we have pulled numerous vehicles from boat launches for the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers along with the different lakes in the area,” said Wayne.
With it still being under investigation, there is no information as to whether or not foul play beyond auto theft is suspected. Being underwater for nearly 33 years does make things a bit more time consuming to research.
