Special election Nov. 8 for school board opening

By John McLoone

The Hastings School Board was expected to pass a resolution at its meeting Wednesday, July 27, accepting the resignation of Director Mike Reis.

Reis was elected to the board last November and was seated in January.

The board passed a resolution to censure him on May 2 by a 42 vote. The censure directed how Reis was able to interact with school officials and board members. The censure was kept in place in June by Chair Brian Davis.

Reis sent emails during that time requesting that the censure be revisited and stating that his Constitutional rights were being infringed upon.

Last Monday night, Reis formally resigned.

The board must appointment a replacement for Reis who will serve until a special election can be held to fill the seat on Nov. 8.

Those wishing to run for the open seat can file an affidavit of candidacy starting on Aug. 2 and running until Aug. 16. The term runs through January 2026.

Affidavits of Candidacy are available at the district office, 1000 W. 11th St. Candidates must be an eligible voter over 21 years of age and a resident of the district for at least 30 days prior to the special election.
