The field for the primary election Aug. 9 for two open atlarge seats on the Hastings City Council drops to six with Dean Markuson leaving the race.

Markuson said he was stepping away for health reasons.

The primary will whittle down the field of candidates who will be chosen in the fall election Nov. 8.

Candidates on the ballot are Joe Balsanek, Angie Haus, Ian T. Martin, Dennis Gerald Peine, Dave Pemble and Tom Wright.

In next week’s edition of the Hastings Journal, the six candidates have each been invited to give their “last word” on the primary campaign, letting voters know why, in 500 words or less, they are the best candidate for the job.
