A weekly reflection from a member of the Hastings clergy

What is faith?

The bible says faith is being sure of what we hope for and confident in what we do not see. We cannot see God but we have evidence of his existence in creation. We see the fingerprints of God as we gaze into a star filled sky or peer into an electron microscope at the intricacies of a cell. Faith comes in as we observe and then come to a conclusion. Did all this come about by chance or is there a designer behind it all? As I weigh all the evidence I come to the conclusion that there must be a God. God is real even though I cannot see Him. He reveals himself through creation. He tells us about who he is in the Bible. Last, he lived among us in the person of Jesus Christ. My faith means that I believe everything the Bible says. I believe God loves me and has the very best for me when I follow Him. He promises to guide me through all of life’s decisions by giving me wisdom that is beyond myself. I have confidence that he will provide everything I need. Whatever causes me stress or worry I know I can give over to Him and he will somehow take it from me. My past is forgiven, my present is takes care of and my future is secure. My faith tells me this life is not all there is but that God is preparing a place called Heaven for everyone who wants to be with Him there. I can relax because my place in heaven is not based on how good I can be because I could never be good enough to earn or deserve it. Heaven is a gift that God offers to anyone freely. It’s called grace. I love this definition of grace. “Grace means there is nothing I can do to make God love me any more than he does right now. It also means there is nothing I can do that would make Him love me any less than he does right now.” That is why they call grace Amazing. God loves you and me equally. I am not in some way special because I am a pastor. He loves everyone equally and more than anything wants us to have a real, genuine relationship with him. He promises that when we talk to him, which is what prayer is, he will always hear us. If he hears my faith says he will always answer, and his answer will be based on what he thinks I need not on what I think I need. My faith says God knows what is best for me and loves me so much that he will only give me what is best. I may not like it but I can trust him. I choose to trust Him because he has always come through for me and he will always come through for you if you are honest and open and genuine in your relationship with him. That’s good news as I see it.
